Overview
IremboPay is a digital payment platform enabling governments and businesses in Africa to collect and process all types of payments. Originally built as a complementary tool to IremboGov, it lacked the structure, design rigor, and scalability to serve as a standalone fintech product.
I joined IremboPay as Lead Product Designer at a pivotal moment — as the platform was transitioning from a backend utility into a full-fledged product. My role was to lead the design transformation and position IremboPay as a scalable, inclusive, and intuitive payment solution for a wide variety of clients.
Problem
When I joined the irembopay team, I found a number of challenges. Through strategic interventions, these were the main challenges tackled:
Outdated Design and Information Architecture Challenges:
The existing design framework of IremboPay presented a significant challenge due to its reliance on a generic template. This resulted in a sub-optimal information architecture, leading to user confusion and difficulty in navigating the platform.
Lack of existing UI prototype:
With the previous absence of a design team and use of templates, I noticed that proposing new features or incorporating change requests became challenging because there was no existing designs to bundle with.
Limitation to only Integration Scope:
The current thinking of the product allowed only clients that already have a system set up, so that it can be integrated before collecting their money through us. This exclusivity posed a barrier to entry for potential clients lacking an existing setup and reduced our clientele
No Visibility on Statistics For Merchants:
The platform lacked a comprehensive solution for merchants, as the existing interface failed to provide an overview or summary of their company's performance. The absence of a centralized and easily digestible dashboard hindered efficient monitoring and analysis of business metrics.
